Connie Francis On Where the Boys Are... 50 Years Later
By Michael J. Mooney in Broward, Celebrities, The Arts
Rarely has a single cinematic work shaped the identity of a city like Where the Boys Are has Fort Lauderdale. The spring before the movie was released, 15,000 college kids descended upon the beaches and beer joints of what was then a mostly-quiet vacation town. Then in December of 1960, the world was introduced to the good-hearted bedlam of Spring Break. The next year, more than 50,000 young people crashed Fort Lauderdale--and the modern Spring Break was born. The movie, based on a novel by Glendon Swarthout, was an hour-and-a-half-long summons to college kids to vacation here without fear of law or judgment.
"It wasn't even a movie, it was a national phenomenon," says Francis, "They didn't know whether to kill me or give me the key to the city."
The city-sponsored event, which Seiler said would offer 'good old-fashioned family fun,' takes place Memorial Day weekend, May 28 and 29, on the same shore where Francis, in the role of Angie, frolicked with her classmates in scenes filmed here.
Seiler said the weekend will feature live music, a classic car show, Spring Break reunions, themed events such as hula parties and beach blanket bingo, and a screening on the beach of the original movie. A publicist for Francis said she will attend many of the festivities."

WTBA police calls:
For those of you who want to listen to police calls like TV Thompson played by Jim Hutton, however, scanner fans these days are not able to monitor Ft Lauderdale PD because they now use EDACS ProVoice which no scanner on the market can decode.
Frequencies of Ft Lauderdale police and other 2-way radio services (i.e. media ENG) can be found on the web at radioreference.com and FCC General Menu Reports.
