Famed singer Connie Francis returned to her alma mater high school in Essex County this past weekend for the dedication of a theater that bares her name.

Connie Francis has warm feelings toward Las Vegas and believes she performed here during a special time in the city’s history.
“Those were the happiest, most exciting days of my life. Oh, I loved it!” she told me last fall. “You see, in Las Vegas they used to have schools where anybody that was in the service industry, whether they were skycaps, or cabdrivers, or worked in the hotels, went to schools to learn how to treat tourists.”
“It was like Broadway today,” she recalled. “We would wear gowns and long white gloves, and furs. I mean ... there was glamour about Las Vegas. It was a whole different thing.”

“I still do,” Grauso, 76, said from his home in the Plantation at Leesburg. “I’m not retired. Even at my age, I’m still out there performing my heart out.”
After serving in the Air Force from 1952 to 1956 — and playing in military bands — he toured with Stitt and in 1960 became the house drummer at the Copacabana. The following year, he met Francis.
When he is at home in Florida, he leads the New Jazz Repertory Orchestra based in Orlando which plays “just good swing.”
Grauso still teaches in private sessions at Music Central and Music-N-Stuff in Tavares.
“He’s very knowledgeable with a lot to offer from beginner to professional,” said Music-N-Stuff owner Randy Nolen. “Under his teachings, practicing drummers can move forward in trying to establish careers of their own.”

This is a poster to be found all over Brussels for a kind of festival or something. In fact the interesting thing about it is that I just can’t help it, I can’t stop thinking that this is Connie on the photo. It’s very difficult because it’s just the eyes you see - but this look is so unique and typical.

Connie Francis with a dress (Aug 25, 2008)
Here is a photo from a 1964 magazine article about Connie’s changing fashion (click photo for larger image). Apparently, Connie’s style of full skirts and frills is becoming “dated” even though the style is very beautiful. Also described Don Loper designed 25 gowns for Connie’s upcoming movie, Looking For Love, and a new hairdo by stylist Ricco.
